Masaaki Hatsumi says that “one who wishes to be a swordsman should first master hanbo techniques, since it can be held and utilized in a similar fashion to a Japanese sword. When utilized properly it was more than capable of defeating a katana.
But, when one weapon can beat another, another weapon can beat that weapon. A never ending circle, Yin and Yang comes into play once again.
Slightly straying from the topic at hand, but I see Yin and Yang work in almost everything, think about it.
But going back to the weapons, for those who were in Kobujutsu last Tuesday, I was using my larger of staffs *ahem* (about 7.5 ft) and the only thing that got close enough was an un-armed approach. Within that session I sparred against: Hanbo, Sai, Bokken and Tanto, but the Tanto lasted oh about 2 seconds, my oponent gave up with the weapon even before we started.
So in conclusion, theres always going to be one better, but everything is good in its own way.
