Archive for martialarts.myfreeforum.org A discussion of all things Martial Arts related, primarily intended for students of United Dojos, but all welcome.
Now, I know I'm not a Karate student, but I cam across this video of this competition from around '96. It only shows 3rd, 2nd and 1st place kata in full, but I'm sure you could find the others in full on youtube. Now, the amount of kata within the world of martial arts, is beyond my know being, at the end of the day theres alot hahaha. But, the 1st place winner of this competition performs Unsu. To me, it is immaculate, a real treat to the eys, check it out!

Q
Unsu
Unsu, literally "cloud hands", is an advanced kata found in Shotokan and Shito-Ryu karate styles. It is often considered to be a very spectacular and visually pleasing kata. It contains many intricate hand techniques, such as the ippon nukite (one finger strike) in the opening sequence. Unsu also contains a spectacular 360 degree spinning double kick, landing on the floor face down before continuing. Because of this, it is a very common kata in tournaments. Being among the most advanced of kata, it is generally taught to karateka at the 3rd to 4th Dan.
The origin of Unsu is unknown, however, it is somewhat a condensation of other katas (e.g., Bassai, Kanku, Jion, Empi, Jitte and Gankaku), hence it is essential to have mastered these before practicing Unsu.
