Home (made) weaponsAfter an interesting discussion in the dojo the other night it became apparent that lots of us have at some point trained/practiced with weapons crafted from household items.
Who hasn't held a broom and treated it as a jo? or looked at a knackered stool, wanting to break off the leg to make a tonfa?
I'd be interested in other things people have used as a substitute for the weapons they would use in class.
Personally i find a barbell makes a good bo, and dumbells make good escrima sticks (oh without the weights obviously).
If you are feeling really adventurous ask dave about his handmade sai

I plan on making my own Kusari-gama, once my shoulder is better, but yeh, I'd love to make my own weapons.

Oh, Little One, how ditsy you can be (In a good way though). No, melon hammers are a chinese weapon and look like giant steel baby rattles and soup ladles are ver reminiscent of them, in my opinion.

Anyone who has had a broken leg will know what i'm talking about here.
Take the crutches you get given by the hospital, take off the upper arm grips and the extendable bits from the bottom and you have yourself a pair of Tonfa and a pair of Eskrima sticks too.
Only one leg to stand on but very well ARMED!

I've been looking for larger weapons of late. I managed to find a 8 ft staff, unfortunantley it was tapered. Then I managed to find some guy who custom makes Bo staffs, with a whole arange of different types of wood, sizes, thickness and finishes, but U.S. customer only. Largest he would go is 104 inches, which is about 8.6 ft!
So I've decided to make my own staff. It will no doubt be complete rubbish and will probably break within a matter of minutes of it being used. But I plan to buy a rather large and thick bit of good quality dowel, to possibly use on its own, if it seems good enough of quality. Otherwise, I was thinking of possibly hollowing it out and putting some form of metal rod down the middle to strengthen it even more and, with any luck, hoepfully reduce the chance of it possibly snapping!
If anyone knows what I'm trying to get at and has experience in such matters, please let me know, it would help alot.
